Creating a Great Glass Elevator that is out of this world!

The Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery

We had the pleasure of working with The Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery in Aylesbury in February 2017.

We are very proud to have been assisting the Museum since 2007, with the creation and installation of graphics on a variety of exhibitions.

The Brief

Our brief on this occasion was to transform its lift into the infamous Great Glass Elevator from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

We were required to remove the current sweetie images from the lift and replace with the brand-new space graphics, both inside and outside.

What we did to help

We met with our client to discuss the brief, our ideas, products and other possibilities; plus carry out the necessary site surveys such as structure and installations. We also took precise measurements and a number of photographs to help us in the quotation and design process.

Our main objective was to make the whole customer experience convincing. We needed to ensure that every time a customer stepped into the lift, they felt like they were part of the story and getting ready to rocket ‘up and out’ of the roof!

To get this visual sensation the best products for us to use were vinyl panels and solvent inks, because of the range of translucency they had to offer.

We had to get the transparency of the print just right, so we carried out several tests. We stuck our test prints to the elevator’s glass sides and checked the amount of light that came through on dull and sunny days, at night, with the lights on and off etc. We needed to make sure it looked good from both inside looking out and outside looking in. This did take some time, but it was imperative we got this perfect.

We worked closely with external agency, Redman Partnership LLP, that supplied the final design. We superimposed the designs onto our photographs taken at the start of the project, to ensure they looked great and the final overall picture worked well. This part of the process helped our client visualise the final look and feel of images, fonts, positioning etc prior to print and manufacture.

Once our client was happy with the ‘splendiferous’ new look, it was time for the installation process.

It was an exciting project to be part of, but also very challenging.

We are very pleased with the outcome and believe this project has been highly successful. We have helped create a memorable window for all visitors to the Bucks County Museum and Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre to admire.

Have you been in the Great Glass Elevator? What do you think?

Many thanks for fitting the final vinyl panel. It all looks great now and the vinyls have transformed the whole look of the gallery.
